Deprecation of ad and ad_id

AppLovin has deprecated ad and ad_id in favor of a new ad identification system. To replace ad and ad_id, AppLovin introduces a new system based on these three attributes:

AttributeDescription / allowed values
ad_creative_typeGRAPHIC, PLAY, VIDEO, VIDEO_DPA, VIDEO_GRAPHIC, VIDEO_GRAPHIC_DPA, VIDEO_PLAY, or VIDEO_PLAY_DPA
creative_setCreative set name
placement_typeAPPOPEN, BANNER, CTV, INTER, LEADER, MREC, NATIVE, or REWARDED_INTER

This update maintains reporting granularity and enables enhanced flexibility for optimizing ad performance.

Report updates

The Campaigns report now includes Ad Creative Type and Placement Type.

API updates

The Reporting API supports this new attribute-based specification. The relevant columns are ad_creative_type, creative_set, and placement_type.

ad_creative_type is only available if report_type is advertiser.

Tracking links

You can use the new {AD_CREATIVE_TYPE} and {PLACEMENT_TYPE} tracking URL macros alongside the existing {CREATIVE_SET} macro. This enables tracking partners to monitor and report by using the new attributes.

Transition period and next steps

During the transition period, AppLovin’s platform supports both the original ad-based system and the new attribute-based system. AppLovin strongly encourages you to update your integrations to ensure a smooth transition and so you are prepared for the full deprecation.

Data accuracy during transition

ad_creative_type and placement_type now properly populate according to AppLovin’s new system specifications. AppLovin recommends that you use recent data for testing to ensure the most accurate and complete data.

When you get a breakdown of sales and other postinstall events, ad_creative_type and placement_type may not be fully accurate if the ad that drove the install served before the attribute system update. This issue is resolved for postinstall data tied to ads that served after the attribute system update.
